Third GreeNexUS Week in Lisbon!

The Third GreeNexUS Week, hosted by Istituto Superior Tecnico (IST) and Teixeira Duarte SA (TD), was held from the 27th to the 31st of October 2025 in Lisbon, Portugal.

The whole week took place at the IST Campus, Alameda Av. Rovisco Pais, in the heart of Lisbon and a specific visit was organized at the TD Headquarters in Lagoas Park, Porto Salvo, Oeiras.

All Doctoral Candidates, some supervisors from Beneficiaries and some Associated Partners, and invited stakeholders joined the week’s events.

The 3rd Workshop, chaired by Professors Miguel Amado (IST) and Francesca Poggi (GEOTPU.LAB), titled “Resilient planning to design cities for climate transition” aimed to provide the doctoral candidates of GreeNexUS, as well as their supervisors and the other participants, with insights into recent research results on the integration of urban design with the possible effects of climate change, with particular emphasis on the development of medium-size urban planning interventions.

After the closure of the initial Workshop, each doctoral candidate was called to present their research work with a short oral presentation in a poster session during which the DCs had the opportunity to communicate their project with other members of GreeNexUS, local stakeholders and professionals and receive constructive feedback.

The participants of the Workshop were invited to join a live “Speed Dating” session. The speed dating facilitated discussions between the doctoral candidates, the supervisors, the presenters and the other participants of the Workshop, allowing for fruitful discussions and new contacts to be established between the doctoral candidates and the professional community.

The 3rd GreeNexUS Hackathon, titled “Climate-related challenges in South Asia – the Case of Bangladesh” allowed DCs and local students from all disciplines, such as architecture, engineering, economics, and agricultural sciences, to collaborate on a multidisciplinary project. The focus was on the various phases of the urban design process addressing, in particular, small-scale project reflecting a social impact on local communities. The candidates, were divided into three groups, and were asked to identify the steps for a development project in a gender-balance and poor social context. At the end of the brainstorming session, each group prepared and made a short presentation of their approaches. The Hackathon encouraged dynamic, multidisciplinary collaboration, allowing DCs to apply their research in real-world settings, while fostering innovation and practical problem-solving.

As part of the 3rd Training Week in Lisbon, DCs had the chance to visit the headquarters of TD and shared the research topics with professionals and Company Board members.

Most of the planned training lectures were held at the Alameda Campus in Lisbon from the 28th to the 30th of October. The seminars provided theoretical and practical information on urban regeneration, sustainability, safety and accessibility, as well as career development, knowledge transfer and management of strategies for the protection and valorization of the intellectual property and research results. The list of imparted courses was as follows:

Tuesday, the 28th of October 2025:

  • Course 1.5: “The role of green areas to sustainability of urban settlements” by Sara Marzio (IST DC06) and “Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) integration for urban sustainability” by Jacopo Tosi (TD DC05).
  • Course 4.5 (Online via Teams): “Accessible Urbanism & Architecture: can citizens feel healthy and happy in our cities” by Arch. José Luis Borau Jordan (FONCE).
  • Course 2.5: “Strategic Planning in Cities” by Antonio Ribeiro Amado (FAUL) and “Alqueva Dam: A multiple proposal project” by João Martins (EDIA).
  • 6: “Urban pavements for improved accessibility and safety: sustainable materials & techniques” by Prof. Cesare Sangiorgi (UNIBO).

Wednesday, the 29th of October 2025:

  • Course 3.5: “Construction in inhospitable areas – case study in Amazonia, Antarctica and Oceanic Islands” by Cristina Engel (UFES).
  • Course 1.5: “HBIM – Heritage Building Information Modeling” by Ana Tomé (IST).
  • Course 3.6: “Building Information Modeling (BIM) for the analysis of building vulnerability in the urban context” by Décio Santos Ferreira (TDE).
  • Course 1.6: “Building Information Modeling (BIM) as a tool for green urban areas and buildings” by Vanessa Tavares (BUILT CoLAB / TDE).

Thursday, the 30th of October 2025:

  • Course TS.5: “Project Management, Responsible Conduct of research and Ethics” by Bernardo Gomes Pinto (TDE).
  • Course TS.6: “Exploiting results: Intellectual Property, Rights and patents” by Alessandra Baccigotti & Laura Camanzi (UNIBO).

Each course was designed to provide DCs with a clear perspective of the different aspects of sustainability, safety and accessibility of modern anthropization of urban and remote areas, as well as specific career development skills. The program covered academic concepts and practical applications, preparing DCs for future challenges in developing sustainable urban environments.

The Final GreeNexUS Traing Week will be held in June 2026 in Wageningen (NL) at WUR premises.
